AFCI

AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) is a safety device that detects and prevents electrical arcs that could cause fires in homes and businesses.

What is AFCI?

An Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) is a specialized circuit breaker designed to prevent electrical fires caused by arc faults. Arc faults occur when damaged, loose, or deteriorated wiring connections create unintended electrical discharges. These discharges can generate heat, potentially igniting nearby materials such as wood or insulation.

AFCIs continuously monitor the electrical current flowing through a circuit and detect any irregular arcing patterns. When an unsafe arc is identified, the AFCI trips, cutting off power to prevent overheating and fire hazards. This is different from a standard circuit breaker, which primarily protects against overloads and short circuits but does not detect arc faults.

Modern building codes often require AFCI protection in residential and commercial properties, particularly in bedrooms, living rooms, and other living spaces where electrical wiring could become compromised over time. Electricians install AFCIs in electrical panels, and they are a critical safety measure in preventing electrical fires.

By incorporating AFCI technology, homeowners and business owners significantly reduce the risk of electrical fires, improving overall safety and compliance with electrical codes.
