What is Capacity?

Capacity is a critical measurement in both HVAC and electrical systems, defining the system’s ability to perform under specific conditions. In HVAC, capacity is typically measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) per hour or tons, indicating how much heating or cooling a system can provide. In electrical applications, capacity refers to the maximum electrical load a circuit, panel, or transformer can support without overloading.

For HVAC systems, selecting the correct capacity is crucial for maintaining energy efficiency and comfort. An oversized unit may short cycle, leading to increased wear and energy waste, while an undersized unit struggles to maintain the desired temperature, reducing efficiency and increasing operational costs.

In electrical systems, exceeding capacity can lead to circuit breakers tripping, overheating, or even fire hazards. Proper load calculations ensure safety and optimal system performance, whether for residential or commercial applications.
