Direct Burial

Direct burial refers to the installation of electrical or HVAC components underground without the need for additional conduit or protective enclosures.

What is Direct Burial?

Direct burial is a method used for installing electrical wiring, HVAC refrigerant lines, or other utilities directly into the ground. This method allows cables and pipes to be buried without conduit, as long as they are rated for direct burial use. Specially designed cables and tubing are insulated and protected against moisture, corrosion, and soil conditions.

In electrical work, direct burial cables (such as UF-B or USE-2) are manufactured with a tough, weather-resistant jacket that can withstand underground conditions. These cables are commonly used for outdoor lighting, underground feeders, and power lines supplying outbuildings or landscape features.

For HVAC systems, direct burial refrigerant lines may be installed to connect an outdoor compressor unit to an indoor air handler. These lines are often insulated to prevent energy loss and moisture infiltration.

Proper trenching depth, backfilling, and local code compliance are crucial for ensuring a safe and long-lasting direct burial installation. Protective warning tape is sometimes used above buried lines to alert future excavators of their presence.
