GFCI – Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is a safety device that shuts off electrical power when it detects a ground fault, preventing electric shocks.

What is GFCI – Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter?

A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is a protective electrical device designed to prevent electric shocks by shutting off power when it detects an imbalance in the electrical current. These devices monitor the flow of electricity and react quickly—often within milliseconds—if an unintended path to the ground, such as through water or a person, is detected.

GFCIs are commonly found in areas where water and electricity may come into contact, such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoor outlets, and laundry rooms. They are a crucial safety requirement in both residential and commercial buildings to reduce the risk of electrocution.

There are three main types of GFCIs:

  1. Outlet GFCIs – Installed directly into wall receptacles, replacing standard electrical outlets.
  2. Circuit Breaker GFCIs – Installed in the electrical panel, protecting an entire circuit.
  3. Portable GFCIs – Used for temporary protection on job sites and outdoor equipment.

By preventing electrical shocks, GFCIs play a vital role in ensuring electrical safety, protecting both people and property from electrical hazards. Regular testing of GFCI outlets, using the built-in “Test” and “Reset” buttons, is recommended to ensure functionality.
