What is NM (Non-Metallic) Cable?
NM (Non-Metallic) Cable is a widely used electrical cable designed for residential wiring. It consists of multiple copper conductors, each with an individual plastic insulation, all encased in a durable, non-metallic PVC sheath. This type of cable is commonly known by the brand name Romex® and is used for powering outlets, light fixtures, and switches inside homes.
NM cable is available in different types, with NM-B being the most common. NM-B cable is rated for 90°C (194°F) and is used in dry, indoor locations. It is available in different wire gauges, including 14/2, 12/2, and 10/2, depending on the circuit’s electrical load requirements.
Unlike metal-clad (MC) cable, NM cable is not designed for outdoor use or areas where mechanical damage is possible. It should be installed inside walls, ceilings, and other protected spaces to ensure safety and compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
Benefits of NM (Non-Metallic) Cable:
- Easy Installation – Its lightweight and flexible design make it easy to install in residential walls and ceilings.
- Cost-Effective – NM cable is more affordable than armored cables, reducing overall electrical installation costs.
- Safe for Indoor Use – When properly installed, it provides a reliable power solution for homes and small businesses.
Electricians use NM cable for various indoor wiring projects, making it a standard choice for modern electrical installations in homes and apartments.
