What is Tamper-Proof Receptacle?
A Tamper-Proof Receptacle, also known as a Tamper-Resistant (TR) outlet, is an electrical safety device designed to protect individuals—particularly children—from accidental electric shock. These receptacles contain spring-loaded shutters that block access to the electrical contacts unless a plug with two or three prongs is inserted simultaneously.
In residential and commercial settings, especially homes with young children, tamper-proof receptacles are essential for enhancing electrical safety. They are required by the National Electrical Code (NEC) in many new constructions. For electricians, installing TR outlets is a standard part of modern wiring upgrades, especially during renovations or new installations. These outlets significantly reduce the risk of injury due to curious fingers or metallic objects being inserted into the slots.
